My friend was telling me about her brand new Kindergarten student son's wish for her to stop sending PB&J sandwiches in his lunchbox so he could use his lunch card in the cafeteria line at school.
Butterbean: Don't pack my lunch.
JW: But why, you love PB&J?
Butterbean: Yeah, mom, but I have a card.
JW: What?
Butterbean: I get to use my card at the food court.

Olympic Moments
I so enjoyed getting to watch the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. I enjoyed watching them with my children. There were so many wonderful moments, but I wanted to share a few of my choices for memorable (and not so memorable) moments. Moments we could share and talk about and learn from.
Good Sportsmanship - Dara Torres just embraced the spirit of the Olympic games when she pleaded with officials to delay the start of a race so a competitor could change suits when hers tore. Oh yeah, Moms Rock.
Most Appreciated - Hugh McCutcheon's father in law was brutally murdered and his mother in law seriously injured in Beijing before the games even started. He had to leave his team to be with his wife and family. When the men's volleyball team won the gold he was so overcome with emotion that he had to leave the court to have a moment. What a way to end the games, a high note during a tragic 2 weeks.
Poor Sportsmanship - There was that dude from Cuba - who I will not give blog time to by mentioning his name - who pitched a hissy fit when he lost his match. So in retaliation he kicked the referee. Get over yourself. You're not cool. Now you can't compete anywhere.
Usain Bolt. Now, he's an amazing athlete, but pounding your chest and pointing at other runners with the bowed up stance seems braggy and uncalled for. Good athlete, but bad example for our youth.
Most Determined - Michael Phelps. Wow. He was a great one to talk to my children about. We knew it would be fun to watch every time he swam. And the kids loved it. "Go Michael, Go Michael!" He was a great athlete to watch and chat about with the kids. Try your best in whatever you do. No matter what. Be determined to always do your best in everything. Again, wow.
Most Entertaining - So it hard to decide which was more entertaining, swimming or gymnastics. Or all the events. But who couldn't watch the gymnasts and just smile. I predict a new American Girl doll for 2009. Shawn Johnson. I called it. August 24, 2008. Just wait and see.The Greatest Athlete in the World - I just really liked Bryan Clay. He made me smile.
There were so many moments and images that I loved, I couldn't possibly tell you about them all here. The men's gymnastics for instance, those guys were alternates and won the silver! I just love the olympics and I am counting the days until we get to watch them again!!!

Sisterhood of the Traveling Sisterhood
You may recall that DH's sister Peanut recently graduated from high school. She left last week for college. My in-laws finally have an empty nest for the first time in 38 years. Can you believe it? Pretty unbelievable. Another post for another day.
Anyway, in case I've not mentioned it before, I'm a sorority girl. Not just in college, I now volunteer on a national level with the organization. It's pretty cool, I have business cards and everything. DH says he is proud yet mocks me at the same time. But I don't care. ;)
So not only did Peanut go to my Alma mater, she decided she was going to go through sorority recruitment as well. I was so excited, I wrote her a recommendation and I just daydreamed about us having a sisterly bond and secrets for life. Like we don't already, but just bear with me.
Long story short, when the fun was over, she had chosen another sorority on campus. A good one, but a different one. I found out through the grapevine that she had not chosen mine before the actual event and I was so disappointed I was actually in tears. But! I am unbelievably proud of her for choosing for herself and not for me, but I'm still heartbroken. Now that I've come to terms with it, I'm still sad, I won't lie. But again, I'm so proud of her for choosing with her heart. It's her college experience and I have no doubt she will have a good one. By the time she called to tell me her news, I was over my tearful sadness. I wouldn't want her to worry about hurting my feelings for anything! I absolutely don't want to take away from her excitement!
When I was active in the college chapter my friend Smash came through. She was a legacy of another sorority. Specifically, her mother was a member of another sorority. Well, Smash felt most comfortable with us and ultimately chose us. I will never forget her crying while telling a couple of us, her new friends and sisters, that her mom was so mad at her for not choosing her sorority. Her mom.
I thought of Smash and her mom while I was crying about Peanut not choosing my sorority. I began drying up immediately.
I've had friends and sisters contact me since yesterday to find out what Peanut did and I've had to relive it all. My friend Misty called me this morning and said really, didn't I think it was pretty funny that of all people, my little sister didn't choose my sorority? Since it's a pretty well known fact that The Boss Lady bleeds Pink & Green. (do those girly colors surprise my gentle readers?)
So, it's all good, Peanut is going to have a great college experience and a great greek experience! After all, she is already my sister for life and I love her no matter what letters and colors she wears!

Secretary: (pointing to calendar) Yes!
Pastor: We schedule those now?

School's Out for Summer!
Ok, so I'm behind, actually school is back in. I have been MIA, but hopefully will back in the swing of things soon!
I look forward to posting more about my "fun" life. Don't tell me if it's not really fun, I enjoy thinking it is!
