Hold on to Your Purse

I just read an article where a boy in Oregon parked his bike inside a Goodwill Thrift Store and it was sold for $6.99. It all turned out alright, since the person who bought it came forward after reading an article about the goof. Poor kid. I hope he bought a lock for that bike when he got it back!

The funny thing is that a Goodwill spokesman said this had happened before. Once a janitor left a mop and bucket out on the floor and when he returned it had been sold. Really?

Hold on to your purses and kids when you shop.

People Actually Do Read Me!

My beautiful friend Skittle has given me such a nice award! I appreciate this gesture, you read me! I will in turn pass it along to some wonderful blogger friends I've discovered!

1. The land of The Chick is fun and entertaining and overwhelming all at the same time. I always enjoy a trip over to the coop.

2. I like visiting Claire because she is young and fun and reminds me of my young "carefree" days.

3. In the Meantime, (like the way I did that?) a visit here keeps me thinking.

4. As does a trip to Jim's Gems, which I know Skittle already mentioned, but I can too!

5. And I like reading about the Dawgs at Quiver of Three. He doesn't post often, but when he does, it's good!

Ice Cold Milk and an Oreo Cookie

After-school snack time in the Boss Lady household can be challenging. Three bossy kids, three bossy tastes, one bossy boss. What's for snack?!?

Yesterday, it was popcorn, it tamed all three savages quite well. Today it was Oreo cookies. I don't give those out often, but I was feeling warm and mommy-ish.

Now, I guess you might have figured out by now that all 3 of my boss-kins march to their own very distinctive drummers. And we love it that way. It keeps us on our toes and I know I have 3 very creative and intelligent people growing up around me.

Well, today while Number One Son & Queenie are contently eating their 3 Oreo cookies while finishing their homework, The Flying Monkey is sitting down, staring at his 3 Oreos.

The Flying Monkey: "Mommy. Please, I have some milk, please?"
Me: "You want some milk?"
TFM: "Yes. To dip my cookie."
Me: "Oh. OK."

No one in our house eats our Oreos that way. We all just bite into them, with the exception of Number One Son, who opens them and eats the filling first.

So, I bring a cup of milk to The Flying Monkey and watch him dip his first cookie in the milk. Dip, dip, dip, shake. Bite. Bite. Look. Bite. He does this with each cookie until he's done. He then takes his cup into the kitchen and puts it on the counter.

Me: "Wait, you still have some milk, finish it."
TFM: "No, it has cookie in it. I done."

My 3 year old has mastered the Oreo Dunk. His father is so proud.

I'm the Anti-Boycotter

I've always hated when the term "anti" was added to anything. And I don't like "boycott" either. It sounds like too much energy is being exerted on not liking something. If don't like something, I avoid it. Simple as that.

I heard someone use the term othercott once. For instance, if you don't like what a movie "stands for," go see something else. Wow. Sounds pretty easy to me.

We like to othercott things in our household. With 3 children, we have to othercott a lot of things. There would really be no since in getting our knickers in a knot if we didn't like something, our knickers would pretty much be in a knot all the time.

I saw where a federal appeals court OK'd an "anti-abortion" slogan on Arizona license plates. What got me about the article was the "anti-abortion slogan" reference. The license plates were for the Arizona Life Coalition, which is a Pro-Life group. The slogan on the plates is "Choose Life." That's what Pro-Life organizations are supposed to be about. Helping women become educated about other alternatives. I personally am Pro Life. I believe the best choice is to choose life. I think most people would agree, life is a good thing. So I would prefer that a woman who was pregnant choose an avenue other than abortion. And I would prefer that because I personally believe that life begins at conception. That is my opinion. That is what I believe. It does not make me anti-abortion.

Here's why:
There are situations that I personally have never been in that would make a decision like that so difficult.
If I were pregnant and sick and the doctor told DH and me that I would die if I carried to term I don't know what we would decide.
If I had been raped and were pregnant, I have no idea what I would do.
I have never been in those situations. Nor would I want to be.
But what I do know is that every time I was pregnant I declined the prenatal test that detects Down Syndrome in a fetus. It just didn't matter to me. I would've carried the baby anyway.

I know there are plenty of people out there who are true "anti" people. And they do spoil it for the rest of us. I doubt someone who was truly anti-abortion would even bother to care if people were educated about alternatives. See any crazy loud protest for what I think is an example of that. I feel like being anti-something is just a lot of energy wasted that could be directed towards something you are passionately Pro about.

A Little Snowstorm

In the south, we deal with a "little snowstorm" a bit differently than people in other areas of the country!
Here we are, having another snow day! It started this morning and it's still coming down!
We're currently getting warm by the fire and getting ready for dinner.

I hope you enjoy this glimpse what our day looked like.

Snow makes everything beautiful

Friday Funny - What'cha Doin?

It's Friday, we're getting ready for a long weekend! Yay!

Since I'll be spending it with my 4 favorite children - an 8, 6, 3 & 37 year old - I'd thought I'd share a "funny."

Number One Son & Queenie got in the car after school telling a joke. Together. It rhymes.

Here it is for your enjoyment. Get ready to either laugh or gag.

Queenie: What'cha doin'?
Number One Son: Eatin' chocolate.
Q: Where'd ya get it?
NOS: My dog dropped it.
Q: Where'd he drop it?
NOS: In the sewer.
Q: What's it taste like?
NOS: Dog manure.

Yes. Eeew.

Have a great weekend with the favorite children in your life, no matter how old they are!

Has the Bible Changed?

That is the question you'll hear people in a church ask who are opposed to change.

I don't think I've mentioned this before, but I work in a church. I am actually the weekday preschool director at a small church in a metropolitan suburb. It didn't used to be a small church. It used to be "the place to be." But like everything else, things change. Pop culture changes. Technology changes. People change. Communities change.

"We've never done it that way before."
"Why do we have to change it?"
"Every time someone new comes in, we change things."

This church is full of old people and grumpy people. Sorry to sound ugly, but that's the way it is. And some of the grumpy people are young, so that's not a hand in hand thing. The majority of the young families have gone on to other places. They are thinking of their children. They want to be entertained. That is the society we live in. It may not be ideal, but if we want to reach a community for Christ and that community wants to be entertained, then entertain them. Be bold and exciting! Why can't churches make worship fun? I don't care what style music it has, make it fun! I don't think Jesus was boring, anyway. People flocked to follow him. He must have had a magnetic personality.

So, here's where I back pedal. Not all life and vitality comes from the young. So my apologies for the elderly grumpy pants photo. It was the funniest one I found. That's all. There are a lot of wonderful people at this church who want life and vitality and excitement and who are over age 60. But the future of the church is with the young. That's the reality.

This is such a random all over the place post, but it just crawled all over me today. It was a bad day, just dumb church stuff. But for example, I heard a couple of teachers fussing about the church not paying their nursery workers anymore. Huh? Why should a church pay their members to serve? Then the ranting about the new children's minister changing everything started. This church is struggling financially because people have left and some of the ones who are still there are not tithing for one reason or another. They even let a secretary go because they couldn't afford to pay her. Come on. Again, if they're struggling financially, why pay church members when they should be serving? (again, these are church members, not staff members, that's a different matter) Church members should serve willingly in an area they enjoy.

I sound like I am talking out of both sides of my mouth, serve but be entertained. But I'm not. It can be both ways! Church can be fun! It should be fun! I want my children to know that being a Christian is fun! I also want them to serve with a joyful willing heart! Not because they'll get something in return!

That is not what Christ modeled. He served, he washed people's feet, he got water from wells, he was the friend of the friendless.

The Bible hasn't changed, but if the world around it changes, changes should be made in how it is presented. Example: Leave it to Beaver was a hit in 1957. The Brady Bunch was a hit in 1969. The Office is a hit in 2008. We all still love to laugh, but the way sitcoms get us to laugh has changed over the years.

Again, I say, no. The Bible has not changed. It is still the instruction book we use to get through life on this earth. But yes, we do need to occasionally change up the way we read it. The way we present it. I'll dress up and read a book for Number One Son's class and they love it! I don't have to do that with Queenie's class, but I do have to read it with excitement for both!

And I certainly hope that I model a joyful servant life for my children, my family and my friends.

SNOW!

We live in the Southeast, where it never snows. Well, every once in a while, but it hasn't snowed (and "stuck") here in about 6 years.

But it did today!!! Yippee! And we sure do hope it keeps snowing so we can have a super fun SNOW DAY tomorrow!!!! The kids are dying to make snow angels! They tried today, but there wasn't enough snow on the ground and it got dark too soon!

It is very possible the city could shut down because like I said, it never snows here and I'm sure all the stores were packed with people buying milk and bread. I don't know how those 2 things help you in a "snowstorm" but they seem to be what people grab.

What would you do on a rarely seen snow day?

My Day in Pictures

Normally, I am at work during the day, with not much time for anything else until I pick the kids up from school. Today my mom came up for a visit, so I took the day off and got to do fun things with her. So I thought I'd blog a different way today! Enjoy!

Took the kids to school, attended Number One Son & Queenie's awards programs.
Lunch and mall time with my mom.
Went to the bank and the post office.
Drove around and showed Mom the community "progress."
Picked up the kids from school.
Homework, dinner and Brownie meeting! (yay, it was our cookie meeting!)Home and Goodnight!

Is it Time to Make Some Money?

I signed up with PayPerPost , and my blog was finally approved after months of blogging! I'm very excited! I get to take opportunities to write about things and hopefully make some money!
I'm learning a little bit about html coding (a very little bit) and like I said, maybe I'll be able to make money in the process!

I like PayPerPost for many reasons:
* Alot of opportunities ~ there are so many opportunities, that I hope I get to take advantage of very soon! The longer I blog, the closer I get to those!
* Great payouts ~ Even if it's just $5 here and $5 there, that adds up! And again, the longer I blog, the larger payouts come available.
* Good reputation ~ I've heard lots of good things about PayPerPost from other bloggers!

Click on the badge at the bottom of this post to check out PayPerPost. Maybe you can help me out with some tips, I'm a slow learner!

But I do love this blogging thing, it gives me license to just type and vent about anything on my mind! I hope that once I start being given topics to blog about I don't go blank! I'm going a little blank at the moment!

Anyway, some blogger friends of mine are doing this, so I thought I'd give it a try! I haven't learned too much yet, but I hope to have great things to report soon about PayPerPost!

My New Favorite Show...

...is Lifetime's new show, "How to Look Good Naked." Carson Kressley ("Queer Eye for the Straight Guy") helps woman overcome anxieties and negative ideas about their appearances and helps them feel beautiful. Without dieting, without plastic surgery, just in how they feel about themselves. It's a wonderful show!

It's not just a show for overweight women either. The women highlighted just have negative perceptions about the way they look and feel about themselves. Self confidence and self esteem go deeper than the numbers on a scale. As a mother of three who is definitely not the size 6 I was when I got married at 24, I really appreciate this program. I have my own issues with my body. Carson, can you come over this weekend?

The episode I watched tonight took a young woman self conscious about her body and her appearance, helped her pick out under garments that fit right, then helped her find what styles looked best on her. She got a new hairstyle and a makeover. They then showed her picture to people on the street and had them tell what they thought of her appearance. (They actually did this before and after) The comments were very different from her own perceptions. After the transformation, the end result was a confident young woman who felt pretty.

So, watch "How to Look Good Naked." It will make you smile.

So will this: The average American woman wears a Size 14 and weighs 152 pounds. The average supermodel is thinner than 98 percent of American women.

Resolve to Be Happy

So, I'm going to rat myself out again, I watched the Today Show this morning. I usually just don't have time, but it was on and I stopped and watched this bit on being "Happy for No Reason."
That doesn't make sense. Of course, there's more to the story than that.
Resolving to be happy, no matter what. Which we all know, is harder than it sounds. Or is it?

In this day and age, more people than ever take antidepressants to help them "smile." Some need them, some just need to "take the edge off." I am not going to address the whole prescription medication for depression debate. Yeah, I'm not dumb enough to go there.

However, I know that sometimes the way we feel has everything to do with how we feel about ourselves. Or how we feel about what is going on around us. The woman being interviewed said that 85% of the thoughts going through a woman's head during the day are negative. She also did a very interesting exercise with Meredith. Go watch the video and see it.

She had Meredith hold her arm out straight and resist her pushing. She did. She then had her say 3 times, "I am not good enough" and then try to resist her pushing. She could not.
Meredith tried again, but this time after saying "I am good enough" 3 times. She resisted the pushing. Wow.

A simple exercise, some might even say a little silly. But it spoke volumes for what goes on in our minds.

"Don't listen to everything people say," your mom probably told you as a kid. Well, now, I say, "Don't listen to everything YOU say."

I'm good enough, I'm smart enough and doggone it, people like me! But in all seriousness, that is now my New Years Resolution! What? I don't make those!

But I am this year. I will resolve to be happy! One of my faults is that I worry. I am awesome at worrying. I could win a gold medal in worrying. And I know that it is wrong. That's something I try to work on daily during my prayer time! But I know my God tells me I AM good enough!

So, we're living, stuff happens, move on! I'll be happy! What about you?

Sigh

It's January and I guess I have the after Christmas blues. I'm not down or depressed, just... blah.
My blogging mind is blank. Maybe someone in the Boss Household will do something funny in the next couple of days.
Here's hoping!

Happy New Year!

I don't make New Years Resolutions. Mainly because I rarely keep them, but also because I feel if I want to turn over a new leaf, I want to do it when I want, not just at the beginning of the year... But mainly because I rarely keep my New Years Resolutions.

So I am going to post about 10 things that make me smile. I have seen variations on this, random things that make you happy, so I thought it would make a good New Years post.
So here goes...

What makes me smile and what will continue to make me smile in 2008:

1. DH. He's a handsome man. And a very talented man. I don't think I tell him either one of those things often enough. We'll be celebrating our 12th wedding anniversary next month and I sincerely love him more today than I did 12 years ago. Awww...

2. Number One Son, Queenie and The Flying Monkey. I would be lying if I said they make me smile 24 hours a day, I but I do just marvel at how wonderful they are. On a daily basis. They amaze me. Biased or not, I have to say that I have the funniest, smartest, best all around kids you'll find!
3. Butterfly kisses. Whether they be from DH, Number One Son, Queenie or The Flying Monkey, it doesn't matter. They make me smile so much my face hurts. That and hearing my children's laughter.

4. Singing. These days most of my singing is in the shower and occasionally in the car. But it still makes me smile.

5. Taking pictures. I, of course, love to take pictures of my children, but then there other things I see that are too fun to keep to myself. I have to take a picture to share what I've seen.
6. Keeping in touch with my friends and family. I love that 13 years after graduating, I know what my college roommate is doing with her life and that we still talk.
7. Margaritas. They probably make most people happy.

8. Other smiles. I love to see other people smile. That will always turn a frown upside down!

9. Girly things. Pink and green things. Frilly things. Shhh. Don't tell.

10. My Dad. He just makes me smile. He's funny.

Are there any special things that make you smile? I hope you have a wonderful, prosperous, Happy New Year and that many, many things in your life make you smile this year.
